Apple iOS 11.0.1 Starts Causing Problems – Forbes
iOS 11 has problems. My iOS 11 upgrade guide warned users to hold off as serious email and battery life issues arose. To its credit, Apple recognised this by rushing out iOS 11.0.1 as a fix, but now it has started causing more problems than it is fixes…
Both Reddit and Apple’s official @applesupport Twitter account are currently being swamped with complaints about Apple’s latest iOS update. Furthermore it’s not just one thing with users levelling performance issues (notably 3D Touch lag), battery life reduction (unfixed from iOS 11), app crashes (particularly Apple Music, including lost libraries), lock screen freezes, Bluetooth and WiFi connections dropping and overall system instability.
Here are some examples:
“anybodys phone start freezing 10+ times a day and then restarting? Since IOS 11 my phone has been freezing a lot and with IOS 11.0.1 it’s doing it even more… so frustrating” – source
“My home screen stutters. 3D Touch drops frames. Scrolling through photos drops frames as well. Feels like I’m using a 20 year old phone. iPhone 7 btw.” – source
“iOS11 issues so far, it has almost bricked my phone: Spotify stops being shown on the lock screen, reboot fixes then occurs again after a few hours. Alarm is silent when phone is in silent mode, no fix yet. Volume control doesn’t work when locked or display, reboot sometimes fixes. Remove aux cable and no sound via phone until app is ended. Multiple apps don’t open properly, freeze on launch screen for 20 seconds or more” – source
“ios 11.0.1 has made the device a lag machine. all the 3rd party apps works slow. apps clear their cache now on their own 100 times a day” – source
“My iPhone battery percentage just went 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 As quickly as your read that. WTF @AppleSupport” – source
“I can’t make phone calls ever since this new update @AppleSupport” – source
“All five family calls are hit & miss since iOS 11 & 11.0.1. Hard reset seems to clear, but who has time when call is urgent.” – source
“@AppleSupport @Apple too many issues with 11.0.1. Phone worked fine with iOS 10. I have to hard reset this device 10 / day …pls fix this!” – source
Then again if you’re looking for a bright side to iOS 11.0.1 there is one.
I can confirm (as do many others across social media and forums) that iOS 11.0.1’s promised fix for Outlook and Exchange-based email accounts does work and users can send messages again. If you’ve been hit by this you may deem it worth the risk upgrading purely to rectify this.
That said if you have a perfectly functioning iPhone, iPad or iPod touch on iOS 10 or even iOS 11, I’d strongly suggest you hold off upgrading right now. While Apple began testing iOS 11.1 earlier this week that will take 4-6 weeks before launch, so it looks inevitable that another emergency ‘minor point’ release (iOS 11.0.2) full of bug fixes will be required before then.
Ultimately the timing of these problems couldn’t be worse for Apple. While the iPhone X has rightly caught the public’s imagination, it is expensive and will only be available in limited quantities until March/April 2018.
Consequently Apple’s focus is on the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus (which have launched to reduced sales and speaker problems) and showcasing the extensive capabilities of iOS 11 which (despite its many secret features) is failing to the do the basics of being fast, reliable and power efficient.
Apple iOS 11.0.2 can’t come soon enough…
