CARTERET – Gov. Chris Christie and others got a look Friday at the daily operations at the stateâs largest Amazon fulfillment center on the same day the online sales giant announced itâs opening another facility in Gloucester County.
âToday is a really great day for New Jersey and a great day for Amazon,â Christie said. âOur partnership that we sealed five years ago â in May of 2012 â is strong and continues to thrive with the news that Amazon plans to open three new fulfillment centers â bringing the total to 10 in New Jersey.â
The three new centers â scheduled to open in Logan, Cranbury and Edison â will bring 2,500 new jobs to the state, the company said.
Christie thanked Amazon for its faith and commitment to New Jersey.
Amazon has more than 13,000 employees in New Jersey at its fulfillment centers, Amazon Fresh locations and Prime Now hubs, according to a statement from the company.
One of those centers already is in Logan. The second facility planned in the township will be a 1-million-square-foot fulfillment center that will pack and ship âlarger customer items such as music equipment, sports gear and patio furniture,â the company said.
The Carteret facility opened in August. More than 2,000 workers are employed at the more than 1 million-square-foot location that ships more than 1 million items a week, said general manager Chris Cooper, who has been with Amazon for 41/2 years.
âAmazon is a wonderful place to work for our associates,â Cooper said. âItâs great and we love it. We have a lot of good things going on, but today is all about celebrating this opening and allowing everybody to come and see the good work our associates are doing here.â
Christie said, âAmazon is now among the long list of really, really good companies that are flourishing in our new pro-business landscape that weâve created over the last four years featuring lower taxes and always having featured a top-notch workforce here in New Jersey.â
And what is happening at Amazon is being reflected in whatâs being reported about the business activity in New Jersey, he added.
He said the long-term news coming out of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is âvery clear and very positive.â
âNew Jerseyâs economy is continuing this steady upward climb,â he said. âFederal data shows that we have seven consecutive years now of private-sector employment growth.â
Christie noted New Jerseyâs unemployment rate is the lowest it has been in 10 years.
âToday we have more New Jersey residents reporting to work than any time in our history,â Christie said.
Spokeswoman Lauren Lynch said Amazon is always hiring. To apply for a job at Amazon, visit amazondelivers.jobs.
