The first story we heard about why Donald Trump fired James Comey as FBI director was that heâ€™d done so on the recommendation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his deputy, Rod Rosenstein, both of whom were emphatically disgusted by Comeyâ€™s handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation. Two days later, on May 11, Trump himself told NBCâ€™s Lester Holt that heâ€™d been planning to fire Comey long before Rosenstein and Sessions laid out their complaints, and that heâ€™d done so for his own reasons. â€œWhen I decided to just do it,â€ Trump told Holt, â€œI said to myself, I said, ‘You know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up storyâ€”itâ€™s an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won.â€™ â€
