Book review: Roxane Gay’s voice stumbles a little in ‘Difficult Women’

Carolina and her sister were like shadows, even more so after they were snatched into a van with galaxies painted on it by a man named Mr. Peter. They were dropped off at a hospital six weeks later, barely able to stand, much less speak.

So goes the first story in “Difficult Women,” a collection of 21 short works by feminist writer and novelist Roxane Gay. The stories, which Gay has published in past years in a variety of literary magazines, gather loosely around the theme of women who live in, or have lived through, some sort of extreme.
