Lee Smith’s mother raised her to leave her Grundy hometown, to pull up her Appalachian roots and to seek “culture” elsewhere.

From the start, though, Smith loved everything about her mountain birthplace, especially the music the Stanley Brothers played on Saturday nights on top of the concession stand at the local drive-in theater.
